If you’re considering NeuroStar TMS for depression or another mental health condition, chances are you’ve got some questions—maybe even a few nerves.
Totally normal.
Starting a new treatment can feel like a big step. But knowing exactly what to expect from the TMS treatment process can help ease your mind and get you ready to start strong.
Let’s walk through a step-by-step guide, what the sessions are like, how long the treatment lasts, and a few pro tips to help you prepare.
Step 1: The Initial Consultation
Before any treatment begins, you’ll meet with a provider at MindTech Behavioral Health for a full evaluation.
Here’s what happens:
✅ You’ll talk through your medical history, current symptoms, and previous treatments.
✅ Your provider will explain how TMS works, go over benefits and any risks, and answer all your questions—no pressure, no rush.
If TMS seems like the right fit for you, you’re on your way to your first session.
Step 2: Mapping Your Brain (Don’t Worry, It’s Easy!)
Your first treatment begins with a process called “mapping.”
This is how we pinpoint the exact area of your brain to stimulate—usually the left prefrontal cortex, which plays a big role in mood regulation.
A small coil is placed on your scalp, and we send quick magnetic pulses to find the right spot. You might feel some tapping or hear clicking noises. It’s painless and quick, and we only do this once at the start of treatment.
Step 3: Your TMS Treatment Process
This is where the real work (and healing) begins.
You’ll relax in a comfortable chair—think spa chair, not hospital bed.
The coil will send repetitive magnetic pulses to the target area in your brain.
You’ll hear some clicking and feel a light tapping on your head.
Each session lasts about 20 to 40 minutes, and you’re awake the entire time—no medication, no downtime, and no memory loss.
Step 4: After Each Session
There’s no recovery time needed. You can get up, drive yourself home, and go about your day.
Your provider will check in regularly to see how you’re doing and adjust the treatment if needed to get the best results.
How Long Does TMS Treatment Last?
Your initial treatment plan usually looks like this:
5 sessions a week for 4 to 6 weeks
A total of 20 to 30 sessions
Some patients also benefit from occasional maintenance sessions to keep symptoms in check long-term.
Many people start to feel noticeable improvements in mood and energy within the first few weeks. And the benefits? They can last months—or even years.
How to Prepare for Your First Session
Nervous? That’s okay. A little prep goes a long way.
Here’s how to get ready for your first TMS visit:
✅ Know what to expect – The more familiar you are with the process, the less anxious you’ll feel.
✅ Ask questions – Talk to your provider about anything you’re unsure of. There are no silly questions.
✅ Plan your schedule – TMS takes commitment. Set aside time each week to prioritize your sessions.
✅ Dress comfy – You’ll be sitting for a bit, so wear something relaxed.
✅ Eat and hydrate – A light meal and water beforehand will help you feel your best.
✅ Bring a buddy – Feel more comfortable with support? Bring a friend or loved one to your first session.
Your Path to Healing Starts Here
TMS isn’t a one-size-fits-all fix—but for many people, it’s a life-changing step forward when nothing else has helped.
Knowing what to expect can make the process smoother, less intimidating, and even empowering.
